THE
PATHS OF FAITH AND FAMILY CROSS
Two
weeks ago during Sharing With the Children in Worship, there was a brief
pause while I waited for all the children to arrive at the altar.
During the pause, one of the children was holding a craft that he
had made in arts and music that morning in Rotation Sunday School.
I asked the young man what it was, to which he responded, “It’s
a windsock! It says,
‘Pentecost – Holy Spirit.’” I
then asked quizzically, “When is Pentecost?”
He confidently answered, “Fifty days after Easter.”
That was the right answer, but not the response I expected.
A few days later, one of the teachers of Rotation Sunday School
approached me and proudly told me how excited she was that the young man
knew the answer to my question. “They
did learn something!” she exclaimed.
This
Sunday is Pentecost – a day that we remember and celebrate the
fullness of God’s promises in Jesus Christ.
It is a day that we remember who and whose we are as God’s family
as we continue to move faithfully forward as disciples of Jesus Christ,
and faithfully remember our mission as the Church family to make and
nurture disciples of Jesus Christ.
This
Sunday is also Mother’s Day.
The children of St. John’s will host a special Coffee and
Conversation in the Rotation Sunday School kitchen (4th floor) from 9:00
– 9:30 a.m., give special gifts to their mothers, and also give each
lady of the church a flower to celebrate all women in their motherhood to
someone - whether biological, spiritual, or simply as a friend.
So,
as the paths of faith and family cross this Sunday, we have a unique
opportunity to praise God for our existence as His creation born of the
womb, and to praise God for our existence as His people faithfully called
to be the Church. Come to St.
John’s and experience faith and family in action.
I believe that would be pleasing to God, don’t you?
Grace
and peace,
Fran
